How to Review Research Papers with AI Without Losing the Evidence

A practical method for using conversational PDF tools to inspect claims, methods, citations, and limitations while keeping every answer tied to the source.

AI can make a long research paper easier to navigate, but speed is only useful when the evidence remains visible. The best workflow treats a conversational PDF tool as a reading companion, not as a replacement for the paper. You ask narrow questions, follow each answer back to its page, and keep a record of what the authors actually reported.

Start with the paper's structure

Before asking for a summary, inspect the title, abstract, methods, results, limitations, and references. A generated table of contents is useful when the PDF has poor bookmarks or none at all. It turns a flat document into a navigable outline and makes it easier to move between the claim, the experiment behind it, and the caveats that qualify it.

Ask the tool to identify the research question, study design, sample, primary outcome, and stated limitations. Request page references with each response. This first pass produces a map rather than a verdict, which reduces the risk of accepting a polished summary that misses an important qualification.

Interrogate one claim at a time

Broad prompts such as “What does this paper say?” encourage broad answers. More useful prompts are precise: “What evidence supports the primary conclusion?”, “Which result was statistically significant?”, or “Where do the authors discuss selection bias?” Each answer should be checked against the nearby paragraph, table, or figure.

When a term has a specialized definition, follow it through the document. Definitions often change between the introduction and methods, especially in policy, legal, medical, and technical papers. Linked definitions help reveal when the same phrase carries a narrower meaning in the actual analysis.

Build an evidence table

Create a table with columns for claim, page, supporting evidence, limitation, and your confidence. If the PDF contains useful tables, extract them separately instead of relying on a prose paraphrase. Preserving row labels, units, and footnotes matters because those details often determine whether two results can be compared.

For a literature review, repeat the same questions across every paper. A consistent checklist makes disagreements visible: one study may use a larger sample while another uses a stronger design; one may measure a short-term outcome while another tracks durable effects.

Check citations and boundaries

Ask which statements are original findings and which are attributed to prior work. Then open the reference list and verify the citations most central to the argument. A PDF assistant can locate the references quickly, but it cannot guarantee that the cited paper supports the interpretation.

Finish by asking for the strongest counterargument and the conditions under which the conclusion would not hold. Compare that answer with the authors' own limitations. The result is a faster review that still respects the document: every useful conclusion has a page, a passage, and a clearly marked degree of certainty.
